Teens aren’t exactly the easiest people to talk to. Achieving meaningful conversations with a teen can be incredibly difficult. Sometimes, getting even two or three words out of them is a rare feat. So if you could use some help, here are some basic dos and don’ts for connecting one-on-one with your teen.

1. Do ask thoughtful questions.

2. Do spend more time listening than talking.

3. Do give them your full, undivided attention.

However…

1. Don’t turn your conversation into a lecture.

2. Don’t give your opinion, unless they ask for it.

3. And don’t shut down their response with critical words or body language. (Including checking your phone!)

Starting a conversation with your teen won’t always be easy. But with smart techniques and a humble heart … you can make a meaningful connection.
