Family Camp 2019

It is hard work, walking the path to restoration, but it’s a path that every one of the families are determined to walk.

Easter 2020, Parent Letter

My name is Ken, and our son is a current student at Rock Solid Refuge.

Our beautiful son Travis came to us, eight months old, through adoption. Travis’s beginning was challenging and he has had many successes but also many struggles.

Life began to unravel for our family in 2018/2019. Travis’s life turned upside down. He had tried running away from home, had been expelled from school, had run-ins with the police, and our home was filled with chaos. We were afraid for his future as well as the future of our family. As his parents we felt overwhelmed and desperate. We continued to lift this up to the Lord and believed that He had a solution. When we discovered Rock Solid Refuge we were so relieved and hoped that this was finally the help that our family was desperately seeking.

It was a rocky start for Travis at RSR but with God’s help he settled in and started to adjust to his new Saskatchewan environment.

In August we attended the Family Camp which was such a blessing to us. We had felt alone and overwhelmed for so long. We got to meet other families who were dealing with the same issues and emotions that we were. The time of sharing and the sessions with Dr. Redwine filled us with hope and educated us. It started to feel like healing was possible for Travis and for our entire family. The RSR staff welcomed us and supported us through prayer, laughter and fun.

Over the past several months we have seen amazing things happening in our son. We were nervous for Travis to come home for the Christmas break and weren’t sure what to expect. We immediately saw changes in him. We could see maturity and an overall happiness in Travis. Situations that were normally a power struggle with him had changed. Travis was respectful and was quick to apologize when he made mistakes. It was the most peaceful Christmas we have had in years.

We are seeing Travis flourish at RSR. He has achieved more success in his months there than he ever has. We see his self-esteem increasing and an overall desire to learn from his mistakes and do better. The staff’s commitment to each and every one of the boys is inspiring. They understand that they are not just changing one life but pouring into each boy for generations to come. They speak life into students and teach them the skills they need to be successful, overcome their addictions, challenges and they learn to be accountable for their actions. The mentorship of each student by a caring staff member helps the boys to understand that they are loved and have a future. Every single staff member at RSR gives their whole heart to these boys.

It has also been a blessing to us to be able to visit RSR and see first hand the staff, boys, and the work being done there. To have a comfortable family cabin to stay in makes life so much easier. I had the opportunity to go on the Annual Montana ski trip this past February. It was so fun to have that time with Travis and to do something we both love. The evenings were fun and it was great to hang out and play games with the RSR staff and family. These family visits are so important. It gives parents and their son time to slowly rebuild broken relationships and create good memories.

We thank the Lord everyday for Rock Solid Refuge. We can’t wait to see all that God has in store for this ministry. Our greatest prayer is that God will continue to do his amazing work there but also that they will have the financial support to continue the work of changing lives.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to share with you our experience with Rock Solid Refuge.

Sincerely,
-Ken H.
