Be an Answer to Prayer

Banner

It’s hard to imagine rejoicing while grieving your child’s destructive choices. To pray while hope seems to be prolonging your pain. To give thanks while you watch the child you rocked to sleep slip away into addiction and dysfunction.

Sometimes it feels like all you can do is pray… but prayer is a powerful act, not a passive one.

The teens who come to Rock Solid Refuge are often the subjects of many prayers. Parents, grandparents, friends, and churches are all praying for this prodigal son to recognize that he is on the path to destruction. A whole community praying that this understanding would bring a desire for meaningful, godly change. Praying that their life, their soul, may be saved from the path of destruction that they are on.

You could be that answer to prayer!

I want to share with you one such story. The story of Lane, who graduated from Rock Solid Refuge just a few weeks ago at the end of August. You were an answer to prayer in his life and for his family!

Our names are Joel and Michelle. We live in Wolf Point, Montana with our three boys: Lucas, Lane, and Thomas. A couple of years after our son Lucas was born, we decided to become foster parents with the intention of adopting. When Lucas was 3 years old, we got the call that there was a 9-month-old boy (Lane) in need of placement. At the time, Michelle was six months pregnant. We really had our hands full! But we believe that God had a plan for us and for this child, and we know that God’s plans are always best.

Michelle was working part-time, so she quit her job to stay home with our new son, Lane, and our eldest son, Lucas. Tom was born just 3 months later, and our family felt complete.

We did not know if or when Lane would be placed back with the birth family, but we prayed that he would be available for adoption at some point. That time came one month before Lane’s fourth birthday. We were and are still so thankful.

As with a lot of adoptive families, there have been bumps along the way, but it wasn’t anything we couldn’t handle. We did our best to ensure our boys had a great childhood, and we raised them as God intended, including church, Sunday School, and youth group.

Just before 4th grade, we decided to put Lane and Tom in a new school. This is when things started going downhill. It was 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic was in full swing, and students were kept home to do online school. This left our kids with a lot of online time and led to poor choices in friends and activities.

Being the only adopted person in our family, we think Lane was searching for a place to belong. He seemed to be drawn to other kids in our town who had also been adopted, mostly to families with no present dads and no rules. Over time, this led to substance and alcohol abuse.

By grade seven and eight, Lane was completely out of control. He was drinking and doing drugs. He started running away from home. Even when things seemed good on the surface, he was sneaking out of his bedroom window and running all over town in the night.

In April of 2024, we were at our wit’s end with Lane. On a drive one day, Joel heard a radio ad on our American Christian Radio Station for a place called Rock Solid Refuge. It sounded so promising. We made contact shortly after.

It took until July of 2024 for Lane to hit rock bottom and finally agree to go to RSR. We can see now the ways that God paved the way for us, including a friendly border agent on the Canadian side who could see that we were a family in crisis. She helped us work out some of the complications of having our son stay in Canada for a year. (Another neat thing is that back in 2000, we met at Millar College of the Bible and currently have family in the area, so we were not unfamiliar with the area surrounding RSR. This made the transition to leaving our 15-year-old son in Canada for a year a much easier one.)

Lane has grown and changed so much at Rock Solid. We are so thankful for all that God has done in his life. Lane has had many incredible opportunities, and we are so grateful for everyone who has poured into his life. God is so good, and His plans are always best. Thank you so much for your continued prayers and support of this fantastic ministry. We are forever grateful for how it has changed our son’s life and our family.

Rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks is much easier for Joel and Michelle because of you, but there are so many more families who need an answer to their prayers. More teens who need life changing support. more support than their communities know how to give. You can be an answer to prayer for these families.

Your gift today means lives being changed and families being restored.
